Hey Matt!

Welcome back, and thanks for the insights! You're absolutely correct: if we believe in the the free market, there is little a President or Congress can do. It is unfortunate that a large number of people believe so adamantly that anything can be done without defaulting into de facto market interference. I find it even more troubling that an individual running for the office would push such an agenda as well. After all, wouldn't one expect a candidate to understand the powers/responsibilities of the office before seeking it?

As a sort of side note, I think it equally important to underscore you're remark that fuel is a globally traded commodity. It's not just the United States participating in this, and any real solution outside of alternative energy development and mass transit projects (whoa big government!) will require cooperation with other nations. The unfortunate thing about this situation, I think, is that the solution is fairly straightforward, but we're unwilling to do the work for a variety of reasons.

I didn't mean to stop there. It amazes me that people really believe the price of gas at the pump is such a simple thing. We have no idea how complicated the process is. Gas is a globally traded commodity and even if we drill more or throw more oil on the market, the US can only have a small affect. The general state of the economy is the same way. A president can do some things but the fact is he can't do much. If we believe in the free market then the president and even Congress doesn't have much power. I just wish voters were more informed on issues like these.

Replacing doors and windows is a great way to reduce energy costs in the winter too. Last year I bought replacement windows NJ and couldn't be happier. My energy costs were cut, curb appeal looked better, and the house has a fresh look on the inside as well.

I think the question is really if any religion should be recognized. Let's face it, making no law regarding an establishment of religion (if you take the strict contructionist view) means religion can't be recognized by government at all. I don't believe many conservatives would agree with me, but that's how I read it. This is an issue we are constantly exploring, and hopefully moving toward what we believe to be the answer. Anyway, this is a great question to ask.
